ReadyDRIVE has suffered from bad driver implementation by Intel and bad support in Vista by Microsoft, which is why most notebook manufacturers don't offer the separate flash modules and the 'flash hybrid' hard drives haven't taken off as predicted two years ago. I stand by the face that ReadyBOOST does not create a cache which is persistent across boots, is not used at boot time, and would not speed it up significantly anyway since the data is already placed sequentially on the faster HDD by prefetch/defrag. ReadyBOOST uses USB sticks, which will never go over ~30MB/s due to overhead on the USB interface. ReadyDRIVE flash caches are placed on a Mini PCI Express card (1 lane up to 250 MB/s) or *inside* a SATA hard drive (up to 300 MB/s). Of course, this is all ready drive, not ready boost as you point out. Keeping it would make no sense since it wouldn't speed up bootup at all. Which is why ReadyBoost creates and destroys the cache with every reboot. So there is no way that a USB stick slower at sequential reads then the internal hard drive will speed up Windows bootup, which consists largely of a sequential read of already prefetched data. Pretty much any internal hard drive sold today and used as a boot drive is going to be faster then a USB stick.
Windows uses a combination of the prefetcher and defrag to put the boot prefetch in a (relatively) continuous location on the boot internal hard disk so everything can be loaded in one (relatively) sequential read during boot-up. I don't care about random access time, because Windows bootup is not a random access limited situation. I don't care about your slow-ass USB external HDD, because you're not booting off of it. Even if this isn't the fastest one, there is certainly flash drives which are much faster than HDDs. My external 7200rpm HDD tops out at about 26-28MB/sec. The flash drive kills it in random access and can transfer data at 30MB/sec when I copy files.
